Background Story

The Bundeswehr Technical and Airworthiness Center for Aircraft - WTD 61 (Wehrtechnische Dienststelle 61) - bears within the german armed forces the responsibility, that only trustworthy and capable flying material gets into operation. The office is also responsible for the qualification and checkout of all changes on already operational flying systems. The agency has its home on the airfield Ingolstadt-Manching which belongs to it and which is shared with EADS. WTD 61 performs all kinds of test operations. For many of these test programs special test airplanes are used which carry a sophisticated test and sensoric equipment and are capable to sense hundreds of values, store them and transmit them to the test center on the ground. For this reason the agency owes a big number of transport aircraft, helicopter, jet aircraft who serve as flying test platforms.
