Background Story
In the course of the TORNADO developement 10 prototype aircraft (GB 5
including a trainer and one for static ground tests, Germany 3 and
Italy 2) and 6 pre-production prototype aircraft (Germany 3, GB 2 and
Italy 1) were build. In most cases those aircraft were not equipped
completely with all systems but only selectively to undergo extensive
tests with one or two systems (e.g. flightcontrol system, or terrain
following radar, or navigation system and so on). Furtheron constructive
changes or improvements during the ongoing developement came up and had
to be incorporated and tested. P13 had its first flight January 10 1978
in Manching with the crew Fritz Soos and Rainer Henke. The main tasks
of this pre-production series aircraft was testing of aerodynamic
behaviours flying supersonic and trials with the new MW-1. Interesting
is also the fact that this was the first airplane to have a modified
leading edge of the taileron which had gotten a distinct knick.
After 15 years of development it was decided in 1984 by the german
forces to buy the MW-1. 1985 the first deliveries started. From planned
2554 MW-1 only approx. 850 were bought though. Besides the Luftwaffe
only the Italian airforce bought another 100 units.
