Background storyWith the weapon system "Panavia PA-200 TORNADO", also known as MRCA (Multi Role Combat Aircraft) TORNADO, the Luftwaffe operates (and so did the German Navy) a fighter aircraft in different versions, which allows - due to its firepower, range and survivability - very effective missions against enemy targets.
Three european nations, Germany, Great Britain and Italy, which operate this aircraft in their respective forces, initiated and conducted the development of this airplane. Additionally also Saudi Arabia operates the TORNADO. With nearly 1000 build airplanes is the TORNADO up to today (2011) the most successful multinational military program in Europe.
To organize and manage the TORNADO project out of one single hand, the three industrial partners MBB (Germany), BAC (GB) and AIT (Italy) founded March 26 1969 the TORNADO management company "Panavia" following the german legal form "GmbH - Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung" which corresponds to the legal form "Limited". From now on Panavia was industrial leader and coordinator for developement, production and the later support of the TORNADO. Its home is in Munich, Germany, close to the old airport "Riem". The three-national consortium which is producing the TORNADO nowadays consists of the italian "Alenia Aeronautica Spa" (15%), the "british BAE SYSTEMS plc" (42,5%) and the german part of EADS (42,5%). These companies serve as partner and shareholder companies and as main- and sub-contractor. In the name of Panavia they bear responsibility in their respective countries for developement, production and the aquisition of components and equipment.
TORNADO IDS 45+46 shows the basic camouflage the german navy. With the special painting on its fin the Panavia documents the remarkable and since 40 year without problems working management job of Panavia on its own product so to speak.
